AP CHEMISTRY SYLLABUS SPRING 2007
Download your detailed syllabus here. Text: Chemistry by Zumdahl & Zumdahl, 5th edition, Houghton Mifflin, 2000. Prerequisite: Chemistry with a grade of B or higher. Algebra II/Trigonometry or Pre-Calculus is highly recommended. Required Supplies: Calculator, preferably graphing if you have one. Carbonless copy lab notebook (Flinn #AP6116 or equivalent, appx. $15.00-20, depending on brand/source). Class Schedule: AP Chemistry meets daily for a two-hour class period (11:30 AM - 1:30 PM). This class period includes "first lunch". On most days AP Chemistry students will bring their lunch to the classroom for a "working lunch". Roughly one class period a week will be devoted to a laboratory experience. There are about 80 class periods before the AP Exam on May 15, 2007. Teaching Strategies: (1) Teamwork: students are encouraged to work together to understand the material. (2) Preparation: students are expected to read and outline the text before coming to class. Class time will be spent on learning activities. (3) Problem Solving: each student will be asked to show solutions for problems presented as class and home work. (4) Practice: the key to success on the AP Chemistry Exam is practice. Students will have ample opportunity to practice both Multiple Choice and Free Response questions. Emphasis will be placed on the writing skills necessary for the Free Response questions. (5) Hardest First: after the review week, we will start with the "hard" material that will be on the AP Exam, followed by the chapters on atomic structure and states of matter.Pre-AP Review Assignment: Read the textbook sections listed below. Come to class prepared to review during the first week of class. Chapter 1 - the entire chapter (9 sections) Chapter 2 - the entire chapter (8 sections) Chapter 3 - the entire chapter (9 sections) Chapter 4 - sections 4.1 through 4.7 (7 sections) Chapter 5 - sections 5.1 through 5.7 (7 sections) Chapter 7 - the entire chapter (13 sections) Chapter 8 - the entire chapter (13 sections) Assessment: A variety of quizzes, take-home tests, and in-class tests will be used to monitor progress.
